The verdict on the specs perspective is that if you’re a heavy PSP user with extra cash to blow, if you need the external mic for chatting with friends or for woking while playing, or if you want to play games on a standard TV (a cool feature) , the PSP 3000 is certainly the sleeker, visually crisper choice over last year’s model. If you’re an original PSP owner and skipped the PSP 2000, you’ll see an even more dramatic difference upgrading. But if you’re already rolling and content with a PSP 2000, you can can save money by not paying yet for this upgrade, unless you have plenty of cash to spare.

Here is our hands on review for this cool gadget. At first glance, PSP-3000 looks similar to PSP Slim. There are are a number of subtle differences, however. Notably, the entire faceplate has been given a smooth matte-finish in contrast to the glossy, fingerprint-attracting coat of previous iterations. The Sony logo has been shifted over to the left above the D-pad, while a push-button sporting the classic PlayStation logo is now in replacement of the familiar “Home” button. You’ll also find that the Select and Start buttons have been given a proportional oval shape. The chrome-style ring located on the back of the unit is now thinner as well. For many, none of these changes can be considered major, but they are certainly welcome improvements.

The major enhancement of the PSP-3000 is its enhanced LCD screen and graphics quality. The screen offers a wide color gamut and deeper contrast ratio. Upon booting up the unit, you can immediately notice the richer, warmer colors. With the “Wide Color” setting activated and brightness set to level 3, you can see a significant improvement in color depth and picture quality, particularly in the Cross Media Bar (XMB).

When you try watching a movie the PSP-3000 will show a decidedly more realistic look, thanks in part to higher black levels. Additionally, smaller details in the distance are easier to see.

Overall, the LCD screen of the PSP-3000 is impressive. The new display does have some complaints however of a poor LCD response time. By the same token, though, it introduces a subtle scanline-like effect visible on the edges of objects when moving quickly from side to side on the display. For many, this is not really a significant issue. The described scanline effect is largely unnoticeable during gameplay, especially in 2D games. The superior response time and top-notch color reproduction of the 3000 LCD display by far outweigh this minor issue.

In addition to the these improvements, the PSP-3000 screen uses anti-reflective technology that promises to reduce glare and improve screen visibility under well-lit conditions, such as playing outside on a sunny day. You can readily witness a slight improvement in glare reduction when standing beside a window indoors.

As to less-noticeable improvements, you can see that the d-pad on the 3000 felt firmer and slightly raised compared to that of the 2000. Additionally, the AC adapter included with the 3000 has been considerably reduced in size. Sound output through the built-in speakers on the 3000 is crisp and clear, sporting a slight increase in sound quality over the 2000. The inclusion of a built-in microphone, allowing for voice chat in Skype and online titles such as SOCOM without the need of an external headset is a another new feature that many who love to work and play will appreciate.

In conclusion, after considering all the new functionalities, owners of a launch PSP-1000 unit may want to seriously consider moving up, for the improved screen and also for the TV-out support and UMD load time enhancements. For those who already have a PSP-2000 unit, it’s not as easy to recommend taking the plunge on a PSP-3000. If you still don’t own a PSP, then now may be the perfect time to pick one up. It is anyone’s guess as to if Sony will be introducing yet another hardware revision down the road, but there’s a whole lot of great titles out now and coming in the not-so-distant future. A few notable titles on the horizon include Star Ocean: Second Evolution, Resistance Retribution, Monster Hunter 2nd G, Phantasy Star Portable, and Dissidia: Final Fantasy. Also, Sony recently released firmware 5.0, which adds a built-in PlayStation Store — exclusively for the PSP. The store offers a growing selection of UMD games and playable demos, as well as PSP format themes and wallpapers.

This should give you a good flavor of how PSP-3000 is different from the previous release. PSP-3000 is the latest re-designed version of popular PlayStation Portable. The first PSP-1000 was followed by the PSP Slim&Lite (PSP-2000) announced during E3 2007. The PSP-3000 is an even slicker version of the PSP Slim&Lite, as announced during Sony’s Leipzig Games Convention press conference.

The PSP-3000 is an upgrade to the PSP “Slim and Lite”, Sony’s lighter, faster, slimmer refresh that arrived in September 2007. The original PSP debuted in March 2005, so we certainly weren’t due for an update this soon, but an update we’re getting, and one that includes a brighter, faster, expanded video-out, and a built-in microphone. The PSP-3000′s casing, which top to bottom and side to side looks virtually identical to the PSP 2000. It weighs and feels the same too. If you take a closer look though, you’ll notice some subtle tweaks. For starters, the ‘Sony’ moniker has been moved from the right side of the screen to its left, where the PlayStation logo used to be. Where’d the logo go? Look down at what used to be the ‘Home’ button, which if you think about it kind of makes sense, bringing the PSP into alignment with the, which has a similar “master control” button smack in the middle of its wireless gamepad.

The ‘PS’, ‘Select’ and ‘Start’ buttons along the bottom of the PSP 3000 are now fully oval-shaped and no longer oblong half-circles. Run your fingers along their tops and they also feel flush to the case molding, not slightly protruding, as they do on my PSP 2000.

Finally, just to the left of the letters ‘PSP’ sitting between the volume and brightness controls, there’s now a tiny hole: the new external microphone that’s supposed to make spontaneous wireless voice communications more robust, since you no longer need a special headset to rattle off taunts or make Skype calls.PSP-3000

If you flip the PSP-3000 around and it looks identical to the 2000, save for the circular band of metal on the UMD tray, which looks to be about one-half to one-third the width of the one on the 2000. Aside from creating a sleeker overall look, it is meant to reduce the amount of visible scratching, something PSP 2000 shows traces of. The overall ABS plastic of the casing feels and looks more metallic and less plasticky now, with a noticeably reduced amount of reflective “glitter” in the molding’s weave. The PSP 3000′s screen remains as prone to fingerprints as ever, but then, so do iPhones, iPods, regular mobile phones, digital camera LCDs, and pretty much any piece of backlit plastic you’re bound to end up touching at some point or another.

If you trip the “on” switch, you’re greeted by the same familiar logo and XMB interface, though you’ll notice it now looks quite a bit more colourful, with enhanced edge-distinctiveness in terms of darks and lights, no doubt an expression of the improved LCD which Sony said would offer a better color range and higher contrast ratio. There’s also less glare. There is much difference one way or another with the 3000, which in other words, it looks perfect in any kind of ambient light and outside of direct sunlight.

Click over to ‘system’ settings and you’ll notice a new ‘colour space’ option that lets you switch between ‘wide’ and ‘normal’. This feature is not available in PSP 1000/2000. Think ‘vivid’ versus ‘standard’ on a TV and you’ve got the idea. ‘Wide’ is enabled by default, and makes everything look brighter and colour-saturated. It tends to make the text in the look a little too vivid at times, but load a game like Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core and the new colors simply pop, making it even easier to identify 3D in-game objects at a distance or in shadow, and the edges of menu bars and fonts in crowded interfaces look even cleaner and crisper. The picture looks quite a bit warmer, too, bringing the overall look nearer the sort of hard-to-duplicate hue richness you often enjoy with a really top notch high-definition tube television.
